LMU Munich continues to grow

14 Oct 2024

Over 54,000 students have already enrolled at start of semester

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich has recorded another increase in student numbers. As of the start of the 2024/25 winter semester, 54,522 students have enrolled at LMU (record date: October 11, 2024). Like last year, over 60% of these students are female. For comparison: At the beginning of the 2023/24 winter semester (record date: October 11, 2023), 52,530 students were enrolled at LMU. This means that LMU has again bucked the Germany-wide trend, where overall student numbers have been declining for several years according to the Federal Statistical Office (data as of winter semester 2023/24).

To date, 9,669 first-time students (students enrolling at a German university for the first time) have enrolled at LMU. LMU has thus already registered well over 750 first-time students more than at the start of last winter semester. As the matriculation process is still ongoing, these figures will rise even further over the coming weeks.

Number of international students at LMU further increases

The popularity of LMU among students from abroad has also continued to grow: Currently, 11,178 international students have enrolled at LMU (same date last year: 10,379). With this further increase in enrolment numbers of foreign students for the 2024/25 winter semester, the share of international students at LMU has now surpassed 20%, which is well above the average at German universities of 16.4%.

LMU President Professor Bernd Huber: “We’re delighted that LMU remains so popular among first-time students and international students. The rising student numbers show that the excellent conditions, wide variety of subjects, and research-oriented teaching at our renowned university are a powerful draw both nationally and internationally.”

Professor Oliver Jahraus, Vice President for Studies at LMU: “An exciting time awaits our new students here at LMU. A wealth of different options and innovative teaching will accompany them through the coming years and give them the tools they need to think in a scholarly analytic manner. Now it’s up to them to shape the future. I wish our students a good start at LMU!”
